An uncertain departure on Saturday night – the flight was oversold. But enough folks volunteered to take a different flight that we were finally able to get on our plane. We arrived in Madrid by 9:30 am Spain time, and after an hour or so of figuring out which terminals we were respectively in, made contact with Grant, and then Priscilla who arrived from England. Picked up rental car, and after an easy one hour trip, arrived in Toledo and checked into Hotel El Greco in the old city, right next to the El Greco museum.
Sleep deprived, we strolled the narrow, winding streets in the afternoon, avoiding the hordes of tourists as we could. We ended up in the Cathedral Square and photographed that huge Gothic structure. A climb up a bell tower in a nearby church gave us a wonderful birds’ eye view of the city and its surroundings. Along the way we encountered many references to Don Q – tschatskies in innumerable gift stores, and a poster for an exhibit in the Municipal Archives celebrating the 500thanniversary of the printing of Don Quixote Book 2. Can’t escape him!
Dinner in a quiet, out-of-the-way tapas place – again, trying to stay clear of the crowds; and early to bed for an 11 hour sleep to make up for the missed night on the trip across the Atlantic.
