Introduced to England from Italy in the 15th century, it was used both professionally and for amateur music-making. Citterns were commonly found hanging on the walls of barber shops and other public places. By the mid-17th century, most source information from England has the cittern restrung, plucked with the fingers instead of a pick, and playing mostly popular music.
