Aside from the organ, the hurdy-gurdy is the earliest of all mechanical instruments. Turning a crank rotates a wheel that continuously vibrates the strings, like a violin bow. Keys press against one string to produce the melody, while the other strings provide a constant drone. In the Renaissance, the instrument was generally associated with street musicians, dancing, and the singing of ballads.
