The krumhorn (“curved horn”) has a distinctive buzzing sound, which comes from a large, thick double reed enclosed inside a wooden cap. Because the player cannot directly access the reed with their lips, the krumhorn has no dynamic flexibility, and its range is limited to an octave and a second. Despite these limitations, the instrument was popular across Europe from the late 15th century until dying out in the mid-17th century.
